Today's New York Times has an interesting article about improved technologies for searching the "deep Web:" the vast body of content that's stored in databases that are designed to respond to typed queries. This information remains invisible to Web crawlers, and bringing it into the search space would greatly improve the quality of the results and could change the way we work on line.
